Tahitian Pearls

The dark and mysterious Tahitian pearls are South Sea pearls which are produced by black-lipped oysters living in the lagoons of the Polynesian atolls (coral islands). Black-lipped oysters are quite large mussels; therefore Tahitian pearls can grow as big as 19 millimeters in diameter. Tahitian pearl lovers and jewellers worldwide are mesmerized by the colour palette of Tahitian pearls ranging from coal-black to light-gray. The Pinctada margaritifera cumingii pearls were used by the Polynesian population as far back as in colonial times. From the present-day point of view, these pearls were used for quite banal purposes: they served as a weight for the fishermen's nets and as material for household articles or decorations. more
