The more thin layers of nacre are deposited, the stronger a pearl's lustre is. This lustre is, in fact, one of the quality characteristics determining a pearl's value. Besides, the colour and size of a pearl slightly depend on the water temperature and significantly depend on the mother-of-pearl: for example, the big black lipped oyster produces dark Tahitian pearls which can attain a size of up to 19 millimeters. Akoya pearls, however, grow in considerably smaller mussels and therefore attain a size of maximum 8 millimeters.

By the way, the first cultured pearls date back to the fifth century BC: Chinese monks put small Buddha figures inside an oyster, where they were gradually coated with nacre. The history of pearls often reflects their religious symbolism. But pearls have a profound symbolic nature, having nothing to do with religion. For many centuries numerous cultures considered pearls to be the symbol of purity, wisdom and beauty. Moreover, in India pearls symbolized a large number of children. A reminiscence of the word “pearl” can also be found in the German language: the Romans and the Greeks called pearls - margarita; this expression also had the meaning of “beloved”. The name of Margaret is still popular nowadays. It is presumably more common than naturally grown pearls.

And generally speaking, only 125 out of the 25.000 nuclei inserted into oyster shells grow into truly perfect pearls. This is why even those of the cultured pearls, which are not perfectly round, but baroque, which have flat or uneven surfaces, are very special indeed.
